Isaeva, L. 2015. Amorphous and crystalline functional materials from first principles. Digital Comprehensive Summaries of Uppsala Dissertations from the Faculty of Science and Technology 1276. 105 pp. Uppsala: Acta Universitatis Upsaliensis. ISBN 978-91-554-9311-0. This thesis deals with various functional materials from first-principles methods and is divided into two major parts according to the underlying atomic structure of the system under study. The first part of the thesis deals with the temperature-induced structural phase transitions in metallic β'-AuZn and perovskite oxide LiOsO3. The former one, i.e. binary AuZn, belongs to a class of shape-memory alloys that regain their initial shape due to a reversible martensitic phase transformation. Here, by means of density functional and density functional perturbation theories, we show that the martensitic transition is due to coupling between the Fermi surface nesting and anomalies in the phonon dispersion relations. The other metallic system, perovskite LiOsO3, exhibits a ferroelectric-like transition and is currently the first and sole realization of the Anderson and Blount idea. By means of ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, we investigate the mechanism behind this structural phase transformation. Another part of the thesis is dedicated to modelling and characterization of topologically disordered materials on atomic level. The structural and electronic properties of amorphous WS-N are addressed regarding its outstanding tribological properties, i.e. almost vanishing friction coefficient. Molecular dynamics “melt-and-quench” technique has been employed in order to construct a model structure of amorphous W-S-N. Further analysis of the atomic structure revealed a formation of quasi-free N2 molecules trapped in S cages, which, together with the complex atomic structure of W-S-N, is the key to ultra-low-friction in this functional material. In the last chapter of the thesis a magnetic class of amorphous materials is addressed. Magnetic order in amorphous Gd-Fe ferrimagnet has been shown to undergo magnezation switching driven by a femtosecond laser pulse. Here, we combine first-principles density functional theory and atomistic spin dynamics simulations to explore this phenomena. A possible mechanism behind magnetization reversal in Gd-Fe based on a combination of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and exchange frustration is proposed.

Introducing and investigating structural and magnetic properties of ribbons Co68.5-xFe4WxSi16.5B11 (x = 0.8, 2) in amorphous and crystalline states

In this study, for the first time, cobalt base ribbons were made by adding two different amounts of tungsten with Co67.7Fe4W0.8Si16.5B11 and Co66.5Fe4W2 Si16.5B11 compounds by melt spinning in the water. The pattern of  X-ray diffraction taken from these ribbons shows that these magnetic ribbons are amorphous. By using thermal analysis curves, taken from the ribbons, crystallization temperature...

Structural, electronic, and dielectric properties of amorphous ZrO2 from ab initio molecular dynamics

Realistic models of amorphous ZrO2 are generated in a “melt-and-quench” fashion using ab initio molecular dynamics in a plane-wave pseudopotential formulation of density-functional theory. The structural properties of the resulting amorphous models are analyzed, with special attention to coordination statistics. The vibrational and dielectric properties of one of these models are then investiga...

The inclusion of experimental information in first principles modelling of materials

We propose a novel approach to model amorphous materials using a first principles density functional method while simultaneously enforcing agreement with selected experimental data. We illustrate our method with applications to amorphous silicon and glassy GeSe2. The structural, vibrational and electronic properties of the models are found to be in agreement with experimental results. The metho...

FIRST PRINCIPLES COMPUTATIONS Properties of amorphous and crystalline titanium dioxide from first principles

We used first-principles methods to generate amorphous TiO2 (a-TiO2) models and our simulations lead to chemically ordered amorphous networks. We analyzed the structural, electronic, and optical properties of the resulting structures and compared with crystalline phases. We propose that two peaks found in the Ti–Ti pair correlation correspond to edge-sharing and corner-sharing Ti–Ti pairs. Resu...
